Today was a really fun day for Nick and all the fourth graders at Upland Terrace Elementary. They have worked really hard this year learning about Utah's history and part of that is the mountain men that lived in the West back when it was being settled. Nick's class did reports and had to dress up as their mountain man and a few months ago so they wore the same costumes to the rendevous today. At the rendevous they get to experience a little of what the mountain men had to do to survive. They got to shop at the trading post with "beaver pelts" they had earned over the last several months in class. They also ate biscuits and chili cooked in dutch ovens for lunch. They had a "real" mountain man that came and set up two huge teepees.
The mountain man then told stories about Utah's past and what the mountain men had to do to survive. They got to ride a horse - Nick loved that part. They had a pie eating contest.
They had the opportunity to make dipped candles.
I was on the committe to help with the candles and Dan came to help run the Coleman stove and we both had a great time!
The fourth graders also panned for gold!
The whole day was so much fun. Nick's school does a lot of different things to help the children learn and the mountain man rendevous is my favorite! It was really fun for both Dan and I to be able to help and be there with Nick.
In fact, Dan had gone on a field trip with Nick's class out to Antelope Island earlier in the week.
They went to a presentation at the visitor's center and then had a chance to go out to the Great Salt Lake and wade in the water.
The whole fourth grade loved this and it was fun for Dan and Nick to be able to go together! It is called Antelope Island but there actually is a buffalo herd that lives on the island now.
